Helping Poor Children and Families in Metro Manila
For more than 20 years, Payatas Mission Outreach has worked to help poor children in Manila, particularly children and families in Payatas, Philippines.
We did not begin with a large organization, a complicated program, or the belief that we could solve poverty. We began by seeing people with real needs and asking a much simpler question:
What can we do to help?
Over the years, that has meant food, education, encouragement, practical assistance, Christian ministry, and simply being there when families faced difficult circumstances.

Why Help Poor Children in Manila Through Payatas?
Many large charitable organizations raise millions of dollars each year to fight poverty around the world. Their work is important, and we do not criticize them for serving where they believe they are needed.
But Payatas can easily be overlooked.
Payatas has long been known as one of the poorest urban communities in the Philippines. Behind that description are children and families we have personally known for years.
Payatas Mission Outreach does not have a multimillion-dollar budget. We cannot compete with the advertising, fundraising, or resources of the world’s largest charities.
But we are there.
Since 2006, our ministry has served children and families in Payatas through practical assistance, education, feeding, Christian outreach, and other forms of care.
This is not a community we learned about from a report. It is a community we have come to know personally.
There are other good organizations serving in Payatas, and we are grateful for everyone who genuinely helps this community.
But the need remains enormous.
And perhaps that is one reason a small ministry still matters.
We may not have millions of dollars. We have something else: nearly two decades of relationships, experience, photographs, stories, and a continuing commitment to the people of Payatas.
Our goal is not to become one of the big organizations. Our goal is to make sure that children and
families in Payatas are not forgotten.
Poverty Is About People, Not Statistics
It is easy to talk about poverty in terms of numbers. But when you work in a community like Payatas, poverty has names and faces.
It is a child who wants to attend school.
It is a parent trying to provide food for the family.
It is a student with the ability to succeed but without the resources that many of us take for granted.
That is why our ministry has always tried to look beyond the word poverty and see the individual person.
Helping Children Means Helping Families
A child’s circumstances cannot always be separated from the circumstances of the family.
There are many ways to help poor children in Manila, and even simple acts of kindness can make a lasting difference.
Over the years, we have learned that meaningful help may take many forms. Sometimes the immediate need is food. Sometimes it is education. Sometimes it is medical or other practical assistance. Sometimes a family simply needs someone willing to come alongside them during a difficult time.
We cannot meet every need, but we can respond to the needs God puts before us.
Education Can Change a Future
One of the greatest joys of long-term ministry is watching children grow up.
We have known children when they were very young and have had the privilege of watching some continue their education, graduate, and move toward lives that once may have seemed beyond their reach.
That is one reason education has remained so important to us.
Helping a young person stay in school is not merely solving today’s problem. It can help change tomorrow.
Why Long-Term Presence Matters
Payatas Mission Outreach did not arrive for a short-term project and disappear.
Our years in Payatas have allowed us to know the community, develop relationships, learn from mistakes, watch children grow, and see how circumstances change over time.
That experience has taught us something important:
Real ministry is built on relationships.
People are not projects. Families are not statistics. Children are not photographs for fundraising campaigns.
Faith Is at the Heart of Our Work
Payatas Mission Outreach is a Christian ministry.
We believe practical compassion and Christian faith belong together. We want to help meet physical and practical needs while also sharing the hope and love of Jesus Christ.
Our purpose is not simply to give things away. Our desire is to demonstrate God’s love through both our words and our actions.
What Can Someone Far Away Do?
You don’t have to live in the Philippines to make a difference in Payatas.

Nearly 20 Years of Stories and Photographs
Over the years, Payatas Mission Outreach has accumulated thousands of photographs from our ministry in Payatas.
Behind many of those photographs is a story.
Some are stories of feeding programs and outreach. Others involve education, families, church ministry, celebrations, difficult times, and children growing into adulthood.
Those photographs are more than a record of what we have done. They are part of the history of our ministry and the people whose lives have touched ours.
We want to begin sharing more of those stories because we believe the best way to understand Payatas Mission Outreach is to see what has actually happened over the years.
